How an air source heat pump installation works, step by step

From the first survey to the final handover — what happens, in what order, and what you receive at each stage.

01

Enquiry and initial assessment

You fill in the quote form with your postcode, property type and current monthly bill. We use this to understand your heating demand and check which network operator covers your area — SP Energy Networks in central and southern Scotland, SSEN in the north and Highlands. If your supply is constrained, we flag it immediately.

02

Property survey and heat loss calculation

A qualified surveyor visits your property to measure room dimensions, inspect insulation, check radiator sizes, and assess your hot water setup. An MCS-required heat loss calculation is carried out to determine the exact heat output your property needs at the coldest expected outdoor temperature.

03

System design and equipment specification

Based on the survey, we specify the right heat pump unit, hot water cylinder, and any radiator upgrades. If your electricity supply is constrained, solar plus storage may be designed into the system at this stage. All equipment is MCS-listed and confirmed in writing on your quotation.

04

Written quotation

You receive a written quotation with a clear price range, MCS-listed equipment confirmed, and the name of the certified installer who will carry out the work. No obligation, no pressure. You take as long as you need to decide.

05

Installation

Scaffolding is included, not charged as an extra. The old heating system is decommissioned, the new heat pump and cylinder are installed, radiators are upgraded where required, and the system is connected and filled. Installation typically takes two to four days depending on property size and complexity.

06

Commissioning and handover

The system is commissioned — flow temperatures, weather compensation and controls are set up for your property. You receive operating instructions, a handover pack with warranty documents, and the MCS installation certificate that confirms the work meets the required standard.

What gets installed

A typical air source heat pump installation for an off-gas Scottish property includes:

Outdoors

  • — Air source heat pump unit (monobloc or split)
  • — Concrete pad or wall brackets for the unit
  • — Pipework connections through the wall

Indoors

  • — Hot water cylinder sized for your household
  • — System controls and smart thermostat
  • — Upgraded radiators where the heat loss calculation requires
  • — Optional solar panels and battery storage where needed
