What does an air source heat pump cost for an off-gas Scottish property?

No single figure applies. The cost depends on your property size, heating demand, existing system, and whether your electricity supply is straightforward or constrained.

What drives the cost

Property size and heating demand

A small detached cottage needs a different sized unit and cylinder than a large farmhouse with multiple bathrooms. The heat loss calculation — required under MCS rules — determines the output needed, and that drives the equipment specification.

Existing heating system

Replacing oil or LPG usually means a straightforward swap of the heat source. Replacing electric storage heaters may require new radiators or underfloor heating, because heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures and benefit from larger emitter surfaces.

Electricity supply

If your supply is constrained — a long single-phase spur, a limited import capacity, or a property running partly on its own generation — the system design changes. Solar plus storage may need to be part of the installation rather than an add-on, and the network operator may need to be involved before anything is specified.

Radiator and hot water changes

Heat pumps work most efficiently with larger radiators or underfloor heating. If your existing radiators were sized for a high-temperature oil boiler, some may need upgrading. A new hot water cylinder is almost always required.

What is always included

Every quotation we issue includes the following, with no hidden extras:

  • —Full property survey and MCS heat loss calculation
  • —Network operator check — SP Energy Networks or SSEN
  • —MCS-listed equipment, confirmed in writing
  • —Scaffolding included, not charged as an extra
  • —Insurance-backed guarantee that survives if the installer ceases trading
  • —System commissioning and handover with operating instructions
  • —New hot water cylinder where required
  • —Radiator upgrades where the heat loss calculation identifies them

Why we give a range, not a single figure

A single figure before a survey is either a guess or a sales tactic. We provide a range with an illustrative caveat on every quotation, and the final price is confirmed only after the property survey and heat loss calculation are complete. This is how MCS-certified installation is supposed to work.
