Areas we cover for off-gas heat pump installation in Scotland
Off-gas Scotland nationwide on the mainland and islands accessible by road bridge. Ferry-only islands are not covered.
We serve off-gas Scotland nationwide, excluding ferry-only islands. If your property is on the mainland or an island accessible by road bridge, we can help. If you are on a ferry-only island, we cannot.
Aberdeenshire
Large rural properties, farmhouses and converted steadings heated by oil or LPG. Many homes sit on long single-phase spurs where the network operator — SSEN in this area — needs to be consulted before a heat pump is specified. Properties around Inverurie, Banchory and Alford are typical off-gas candidates.
Highlands (edge towns)
Towns like Aviemore, Dingwall and Nairn have a mix of modern estates on the gas grid and older properties on oil, LPG or storage heaters. The older stock — stone-built cottages and croft houses — benefits from a proper heat loss survey before any equipment is recommended.
Moray
Elgin, Forres and Keith have significant numbers of off-gas properties, particularly rural farms and cottages. The coastal climate is milder than the Highlands, which can reduce heating demand, but exposed hill properties inland need careful sizing. SSEN covers this area.
Perthshire glens
Properties in Glen Lyon, Aberfeldy, Pitlochry and Strathtay are often off the gas grid and heated by oil, LPG or solid fuel. The glens include some properties with constrained electricity supplies — long spurs and limited import capacity — where solar plus storage may be part of the solution.
Argyll
Oban and the surrounding area includes many off-gas homes, from coastal cottages to inland farms. Properties accessible by road bridge on the mainland and larger islands are covered. Ferry-only islands such as Islay, Jura and Colonsay are not covered.
Scottish Borders
Hill farms and rural properties around Peebles, Hawick, Selkirk and Kelso are frequently off the gas grid. SP Energy Networks covers much of the Borders. Properties here tend to have solid stone construction, so a thorough heat loss calculation is essential before specifying a system.
Dumfries and Galloway
Rural hill farms and cottages across Galloway, from Newton Stewart to Castle Douglas, are commonly heated by oil or LPG. The area includes both straightforward off-gas properties and some with constrained supplies where the network operator needs to be involved early.
Angus and Dundee hinterland
Rural Angus — Glamis, Kirriemuir, Brechin — has farms and cottages off the gas grid. Closer to Dundee, most properties are on the gas network, but the surrounding glens and hills include off-gas homes that are good candidates for heat pump conversion.
Which network operator covers your postcode?
SP Energy Networks
Central and southern Scotland, including the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, much of Angus, and parts of Argyll. If your postcode falls in this area, SP Energy Networks is the distribution network operator.
SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks)
Northern Scotland and the Highlands, including Aberdeenshire, Moray, Highland edge towns, Perthshire glens and parts of Argyll. SSEN manages the network in these areas and is consulted when a supply is constrained.
